An enjoyable day-trip

The following description is a tour for a nice day. It's ideal for escaping the heat on one of those HOT days. Most of the way is above 800 m so it's much cooler up here. We started at around 10AM and returned around 5PM. It can be done in any 4x4 with some decent ground clearance regardless of weather conditions as the ground is almost always stony. I give the coordinates for GPS use as indication but it surely can be made without. Use the Degree-Minutes-1/1000 Minutes setting and metric height units.

We choose the roads from the map and inspiration. Although we didn't see any signs forbidding access those situations can quickly change. Don't enter any area that's signposted as off-limits.

- From Selce drive to Crikvenica and stop at the Supermarket downtown to fill up on provisions. The parking near the shop is not free, better follow the road up to Tribalj for 100 meters, then turn right after the fire station over a small bridge. Here's a free parking with some border stones so high only 4x4's can park on them.
- Drive the road up to Tribalj and continue until you see a lake on your left. Here are some picnic spots but it's quite bare, better spots later in the mountains. Near the lake turn right on the road to Bribir for 3,5 Km.
- To the left you see a small tarmac road leading sharp uphill and signposted "Antovo". Marked "A" on the map above. After some hundred metres you can either take the left or right fork, they join again after the village of Antovo. Take care, the large arrows painted in the middle of the road are markings for a mountain bike track and those can come up unexpected and at high speeds. the next hospital is at Crikvenica near the free parking I mentioned above, just in case.

The point "B" is a fork where 2 small tarmac roads go off to the left. Go straight on , staying on the narrow tarmac road with the great view of the coast to your right side.

45° 14' 844 N, 14°43' 006 E, Height: 837 m

The point "C" is as far as this more detailed map goes. Here the tarmac turns off to the left, away from the great coastline. Just before the corner is a small space where you can park your car and enjoy the view. It's also the highest place, a small pass between the coast and the next valley. Shortly after the bend tarmac ends.

45° 13' 556 N, 14° 45' 432 E, Height 931

At one point you come onto another large way that goes from left to right. Turn sharp right and stay on the large way.

Sorry, might be at 45° 13' 813N and 14° 42' 702 E but I'm not sure. Anyway you can't miss it.

Continue through a very nice forest for some miles (photo left), staying on the main track until a small tarmac road comes from the left and goes straight on. Follow this road straight on.

After a short stretch you come to a slightly larger road. Turn left. This is point "D" on the map below.

45° 12' 456 N, 14° 47' 143 E, Height: 803 m

You will drop into a little valley with some houses spread out randomly. This is Lukovo. No Restaurant or other facilities. Just at the last houses the main road turns right and goes uphill. Don't drive straight up.

Some time after the ascent you come to our preferred picknic spot. You pass some small hunting huts and on your left you see a small, hilly meadow surrounded by large trees. Feel free to do the same as we did but remember to take all your litter with you. Marked on the map as "E". 45° 13' 145 N, 14° 48' 482 E, Height 844 m

Shortly after the break you will come to a tiny restaurant, signposted as "Buffet Vera", point "L" on the map above at 45° 13' 221 N, 14° 48' 412 E, height 867 meters. Seems to be ok as many locals eat here. Leave this on your right, contunue straight on the "main" road which nicely meanders through thick forest until it reaches the open plains before Lic. Go straight on until you come to the village of Fuzine. If you have a dog or children and want to give them a cool down, drive the road at 1 o'clock which leads to an artificial lake only half a mile away. Before this you will pass a filling station.

If you wish to continue, turn right onto the main road uphill.

The next village lies after a small hill. It's called Vrana and you turn right here just before a wooden bus station. The way is signposted as PILANA. Take care on the whole following track as there always are logging operations going on and large lorries may come from the opposite way with quite a speed. Even off tarmac. So be warned. 45° 18' 890 N, 14° 43' 626 E, Height 754 m
Cross the railway line. Soon after you will see a bifurcation. Stay on the main road which soon starts to climb.
Next turn right at 45° 17' 158 N and 14° 45' 898 E. 200 meters later the tarmac ends. For all the coming stuations you normally stay on the main track unless mentioned otherwise.
Next turn left at 45° 18'148N, 14° 44' 840E
Turn left again near a small house on your left. 45°17' 392 N, 14° 45' 898 E
Take the right main track. Ignore the small path even more to the right. 45° 17' 392 N, 14° 46' 095 E, Height 980 meters
Stay on the main track straight on. 45° 17' 229 N, 14° 46' 368 E
Take the right on an Y-junction. 45° 17' 096 N, 14° 46' 598 E
Pass under an open gate. I believe it's used to close the road in winter as it doesn't look as if it's often used. If it's closed however you have to turn around and find another way. 45° 16' 898 N, 14° 47' 361 E
You will come to some well-built Serpentines, an great place to take pictures. 45° 16' 588 N, 14° 47' 852 E
Shortly after this you come to a larger junction where you take the second left. A writing on a tree points in this direction and indicates "VISEVICA", the highest mountain in this forest. 45° 16' 433 N, 14° 47' 865, height 1175 meters
Turn left. 45° 15' 517 N, 14° 46' 547 E, height 1215 meters
Straight on. 45° 15' 175 N, 14° 48' 820 E, height 1263 meters

In a large turn a track goes off to the right and downhill. At this place you leave the main track which you followed until now. 45° 15' 121 N, 14° 49' 369 E, 1244 meters.

However the main track to the left meanders from now on through a strange landscape downhill, made of eroded stones and dense forest grown in bizarre ways. Well worth looking at. If you continue downhill the pass and turn left at the next large "Y" (marked "LIC") you will return to Vrana where you started this leg.

But on to the right and downhill. This stretch is much softer as it has not the foundation of the previuos track but no problem at all. It gets better when this track from left and downhill catches up. Go straight on, watch for occasional large stones.
Straight on. 45° 13' 629 N, 14° 51' 240 E
Take the left. 45° 13' 284 N, 14° 51' 251 E
Atfer another hopefully open gate you arrive on tarmac again at 45° 12' 352 N, 13° 52' 106 E. You are now at the point "K" on the above map. Turn right and take care of upcoming traffic. If the gate is closed which would be unusual return to the situation above and try the other track.

After some kilometers you reach the "Buffet Vera" again, point "L" on the map above at 45° 13' 221 N, 14° 48' 412 E, height 867 meters. To get back to the coast and Selce turn left and always stay on the main road. You will come up on the map at the top from the small road over Bribir. In Bribir turn left for Selce.

Hope you will enjoy this short trip as much as we did. Please tell me if you made it and if anything was unclear or interdictions posted.
